Speak Easy Speech · Scottsdale & Phoenix, AZ What Is Articulation Therapy? Articulation refers to how we physically produce speech sounds — the precise movements of the tongue, lips, teeth, and jaw that turn air into clear, understandable words. When a child has an articulation disorder, they substitute, omit, or distort certain sounds in ways that make their speech difficult for others to understand. Articulation therapy works by teaching children to recognize, practice, and use sounds correctly — starting in isolated practice and building all the way to natural conversation. With consistent, play-based therapy, most children make meaningful progress. At Speak Easy Speech, we work with children of all ages — from toddlers just beginning to develop speech sounds, to school-age kids exhibiting difficulty with specific sounds like /r/ or /s/, to teens who want to speak more clearly and confidently. Is This Your Child? Signs Your Child May Benefit from Articulation Therapy Every child develops speech sounds on their own timeline — but certain patterns are worth evaluating. You may notice your child: → Is hard to understand, even for family members → Leaves sounds off the ends of words ("ca" for "cat") → Substitutes one sound for another ("wabbit" for "rabbit") → Struggles with specific sounds like /r/, /s/, /l/, or /th/ → Gets frustrated when people don't understand them → Avoids talking in social situations or at school → Has been flagged by a teacher or pediatrician for speech concerns → Is older but still has sound errors that haven't resolved on their own Not sure if it's a concern? Trust your instinct. Parents are often the first to notice something is off — and early evaluation is always better than waiting to see if it resolves on its own.
